Others to check out: Midwife by Katja Kettu, Ice by Ulla-Lena Lundberg, Year of the Hare by Arto Paasilinna, Memory of Water by Elina Itäranta Summer book tells the story of an aging artist and her granddaughter spending their summers on an Island in the Gulf of Finland. She writes about nature and humanity with warmth, humour and little sadness. Jansson is maybe best known for her Moomins, but she was a gifted novelist as well. Hiding places is a collection of short stories and every bit as good as his Elämiä which sadly hasn't been translated. He truly knows humanity and paints vivid pictures of people with very few words. Tamminen is amazing with his laconic storytelling and eye for detail. Explores themes of humanity, love and environmentalism. It tells the story of a photographer who finds an injured Troll and brings it home. Sinisalo is one of the best Finnish fantasy and sci-fi authors and Troll is her masterpiece. An intensive read for sure and not for everybody, but it is amazing if you enjoy historical fiction and slower pacing.Ģ) Troll: a love story by Johanna Sinisalo It's a massive trilogy telling the story of a family and their home Village through three generations and the civil war, winter war and continuation war. Okay, I have to recommend this though it is very much an old classic. But there are newer excellent Finnish books and many that, imho, capture Finnish culture and personality better than some. However, it might not be the easiest and most fun to read, especially because the English translations haven't been good. If you ask for Finnish books, you're bound to get many of the same old classics, such as the Unknown soldier.
